In Pursuit of Virtue

In Pursuit of Virtue

In Pursuit of Virtue
The world is for everybody, but heaven is only for the pure in heart, the virtuous and the most pious. This book, a translation of al-Akhlaq wa’s-Sufral by Ibn Hazm, shows us how to attain piety and virtue. This is not simply a scholarly look at human nature but a book that can transform one’s life.

About Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi
Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Sa`id ibn Hazm, Abu Muhammad al-Farisi al-Andalusi al-Qurtubi al-Yazidi (d. 465), praised by al-Dhahabi as 'the peerless imam, the Ocean of sciences and disciplines, the jurist, hadith master, scholar of kalam, man of letters, Zahiri minister, and prolific author.' He was born into a princely family of Cordova where his education first centered on Arabic poetry, philosophy, and kalam.

Ibn Hazm is well known for following the Zahiriyya (literalist) school devised originally by Dawud ibn al Isfahani (d.270 AH) and became it's founding father in it's developed form .
He was opposed by many scholars of his time in Cordoba and Valencia. Some of his books were publicly burned as a mark of punishment by the command of al-Mu'tamid ibn Abbas in Seville.
During the brief period he spend in Almeira he engaged in active debates with Jews and Christians, and was very much involved in the study of other religion.
However even his enemies and critics acknowledged that his learning was vast and deep.

It is reported that Al-Dhahabi said: 'I saw a volume of his in which he puts logic at the head of all the sciences, and I was pained for him, for he is a foremost leader in the Islamic sciences, profoundly erudite in hadith documentation and without peer - despite his dry strain and fanatic literalism - in the branches but not the principle'

Excerpt taken from chapter IX -
' 257. If you take pride in your physical strength, remember that the mule, the donkey, and the bull are stronger than you and better suited to carrying heavy loads. If you feel vain about the lightness of your running style, remember that the dog and the hare surpass you in this field. It is extremely curious that rational beings feel proud of something in which they are surpassed by dumb animals.' In Pursuit of Virtue Ibn Hazm's Al-Akhlaq wa'l-Sufral

Exellent, well worth finding., October 13, 2007
A little known book on ibn Hazm but probably the best you can find.

Granted Anwar Chejnes books are probably the best on ibn Hazm but due to the fact they are almost impossible to find (the only Chejne book I have is his Morisocs book published almost a decade ago) This one by Abu Laylah is without dobut the best biography and translation of ibn Hazm that is around today.

The book begins with a biography of ibn Hazm, his birthdate, place, family background, the debates over his own ethnic background and the society in which ibn Hazm grew up in. The biography covers his teachers and students and the many trials that he went through.

The second chapter then covers ibn Hazms thoughts on morality and theology and is extensive and detailed. The final part of the book is a translation of one of ibn Hazms works on morality and theology.

The book is well documented throughout and includes an extensive biography for the reader should they wish to further their research.

An exellent book I strongly recomend. To anyone who has read ibn Hazms classic "Wings of a dove" They should get this book, if anything for the biography alone!
